The Forest Hills police officers were called a reporter of a man "yelling at people, lifting his shirt and displaying a firearm" in the 2300 block of Ardmore Boulevard at 10:19 a.m., Allegheny County police stated in a release that evening.

What sparked the incident remains unclear.

The officers found the man— later identified as Marcus Allen— walking on Yost Boulevard near Ardmore Manor Drive, but when they attempted to speak with him he pulled out a handgun and shot at them, according to the release.

One officer was struck in the pants but was uninjured, the police explain.

"The officers returned fire striking the male multiple times," the police say. Allen "was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased."
